Aliyeik Al Nusra

1. Background and Rationale

The Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) of Kenya are home to some of the most marginalized and underserved populations. These regions experience recurring droughts, chronic food insecurity, limited access to education and health services, and poor infrastructure development. Among these populations, Muslim communities—particularly in counties like Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Marsabit, and Tana River—face compounded challenges due to historical neglect, underrepresentation, and poverty.

ALIYEIK INITIATIVE  CBO, through its Islamic Ummah-focused support window ALIYEIK AL NUSRA, aims to offer targeted humanitarian and development assistance grounded in Islamic values of compassion (rahma), solidarity (ukhuwwa), and justice (‘adl). Our intervention specifically targets the following three priority areas:

2. Focus Areas

2.1 Food Security and Nutrition

Problem Statement:
ASAL counties face chronic food insecurity and high rates of malnutrition, especially among children under five, pregnant and lactating mothers, and the elderly. Drought and climate change have made traditional livelihoods unsustainable.

Objectives:

  • Enhance access to nutritious food for vulnerable households.
  • Promote sustainable food production through climate-smart agriculture.
  • Provide emergency food aid during droughts or crises, especially during Ramadhan and other Islamic holy periods.

Key Interventions:

  • Monthly food basket distribution (with Halal-certified items).
  • Community-based nutrition education aligned with Islamic dietary principles.
  • Support to small-scale Islamic farmer groups with drought-resistant inputs.
  • Establishment of communal kitchen gardens in Madrasas and Mosques.

2.2 Mosque and Madrasa Building and Support

Problem Statement:
Many Muslim communities in ASAL regions lack decent worship and learning spaces. Madrasas and Mosques serve not only religious purposes but also community centers, especially in times of need.

Objectives:

  • Construct and renovate Mosques and Madrasas in marginalized Muslim communities.
  • Strengthen Islamic education and community cohesion.
  • Provide teaching and learning materials to underserved Madrasas.

Key Interventions:

  • Construction of eco-friendly Mosques and Madrasas.
  • Provision of Qur’ans, Islamic texts, desks, and educational materials.
  • Monthly support stipends for Madrasa teachers (Ustadhs).
  • Capacity building on peacebuilding, Fiqh, and youth mentorship.

2.3 Yatima (Orphans) Support

Problem Statement:
Orphans in ASAL regions are at high risk of exploitation, school drop-out, malnutrition, and psycho-social distress. The Islamic principle of kafala (guardianship) obliges the Ummah to care for Yatima.

Objectives:

  • Improve the welfare and dignity of orphaned children.
  • Increase access to education, health, and emotional support.
  • Provide holistic, faith-based care solutions.

Key Interventions:

  • Monthly cash transfers or in-kind support to foster families.
  • Sponsorship of school fees, uniforms, and madrasa attendance.
  • Psycho-social and spiritual support (mentorship programs with Imams and community elders).
  • Annual Eid and Ramadhan Yatima gift packages and communal Iftars.
