About Us

Who We Are

Aliyeik Initiativeis a community-driven organisation founded in Marsabit County in 2013. Our journey began with a group of passionate local youths who wanted to address the hardships their communities faced – from recurring droughts and hunger to conflict and lack of opportunities. Today, we have grown into a registered non-profit entity with operations in Marsabit (Northern Kenya),Turkana,Isiolo,Samburu and Nairobi, partnering with communities across Kenya’s drylands. We remain community-led and people-focused, believing that sustainable change must come from within.

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of local communities through sustainable development initiatives in Kenya. We do this by addressing urgent needs (like food security, water, health care) while building long-term solutions (like education, livelihoods and peace).

Vision

A better future with dignified livelihoods for families and individuals in our villages, and self-sustaining communities for generations to come. We envision empowered communities that are resilient, inclusive, and prosperous – where no one is left behind.

Core Values

Our core values guide everything we do:

People Centered

We put communities at the heart of development. Local people’s needs, voices, and leadership drive all our efforts.

Transparency & Accountability

We uphold honesty and responsibility in our work, managing resources prudently and openly.

Sustainability

We pursue solutions that last. Every project is designed to create lasting impact without dependence on perpetual aid.

Holistic Approach

We strengthen the whole person and community—resilient livelihoods, resilient minds, resilient spirit. From rural entrepreneurship to climate resilience, inclusion and preparedness, we advance integrated development that builds dignity and community-led change.

Our Team

Aliyeik Initiative is led by a Board of Directors composed of respected community leaders and professionals. Our day-to-day operations are managed by an Executive Director and a small staff of dedicated program officers, trainers, and community mobilizers. Many of our team members grew up in the communities we serve. We also benefit from an active volunteer network – both local and international volunteers work alongside us, contributing skills in teaching, counseling, technology, and more. This mix of local insight and outside expertise fuels our innovative, collaborative culture.

Our Approach

Graduation Model & Shock Preparedness

We tackle poverty using a proven “Graduation Model,” which offers ultra-poor households a pathway out of extreme poverty. This approach provides training, mentorship, seed capital, and support groups over a two-year period, enabling families to “graduate” from reliance on aid to running sustainable micro-enterprises. By combining business skills, savings groups, and small startup grants, we help women and youth create income and build savings. As a result, they can confidently navigate challenges and shocks. Shock preparedness is integral to our approach – we strengthen community resilience so that droughts, conflicts, or health crises do not wipe out progress. Participants learn to diversify livelihoods, save for emergencies, and plan for climate extremes. This dual focus on economic empowerment and resilience ensures that gains are long-lasting and families are less vulnerable to future disasters.

Where We Work

Our roots are in Marsabit County, an arid frontier region in northern Kenya. Here we work with pastoralist communities and remote villages that have historically been underserved. We have expanded to parts of Isiolo,Samburu,Turkana and now Nairobi County, focusing on informal settlements where many rural migrants and vulnerable youth live. By operating in both rural and urban settings, we address a broad spectrum of needs – from nomadic pastoral families affected by drought, to at-risk youth in city slums. We continue to forge partnerships in neighboring counties (such as Garissa and Wajir ), aiming to replicate our successful programs and reach more communities in need. Wherever we work, we collaborate closely with local leaders, government departments, and other NGOs to maximize our impact and ensure culturally appropriate solutions.
